Tsunami – 26th December 2004

The sun cast light on smiling faces
As we sat around exchanging tales
Of journeys to exciting places,
We laughed and sang beneath the sails.

Travelling around this beautiful land
Where wallabies and lizards bathe in sun,
A trip on a boat and an island of sand,
Days spent with strangers, having fun.

All these faces they come and go
Names and voices drift through my head
As my heart stops in a violent echo,
‘We’re going to Thailand for Christmas’ they said.

In my bedroom I sat alone
And watched destruction on TV,
Did they ever make it home?
Or where they taken by the sea?

The water crashed through solid walls
And tore its way down streets,
Footage was shown of frantic calls,
‘There’s a wave of over 20 feet!’

Many lives were lost that day
And peoples homes were torn apart,
Grieving families tried to pray
For god to mend their broken hearts.

As the ocean cried a giant tear
It drowned so many with its sorrow,
The whole world heard with morbid fear
Apart from those denied tomorrow.

A droplet falls and ripples wide,
I think of all the friends I met
And I can’t remember if I cried,
The day I know I’ll never forget.
